Former President Donald Trump says his wife Melania is expected to make more regular public appearances during the election campaign.

Trump made the comments during his Fox News town hall interview earlier this week with host Laura Ingraham.

“It’s funny, she was a very successful model, very, very successful, and yet she was a private person. She’s going to go out a lot. Not because she likes to do it, but because she likes the results,” he said Tuesday. “She wants to see this country really succeed. She loves the country.”

“You know, a lot of first ladies would go out; they want to be everywhere. They get mad at their husband because he doesn’t introduce them,” Trump continued. “If he didn’t introduce her to Melania, she would be very happy. She’s just a different type of person.”

Melania has been largely absent from her husband’s 2024 presidential bid so far, making few public appearances and staying away from the media.

His absence, until recently, was explained by the death of his mother, Amalija Knavs, earlier this year. But as the campaign season gets more intense, political commentators have questioned whether she will step back from her efforts to support Trump.

Trump also expressed his gratitude for Melania’s dedication to raising his son, Barron Trump.

“Her life revolves around that guy. He’s very important to her,” Trump said. “At the same time, he also revolves around our country and the success of our country. He has raised a lot of money for charity. He is a private person.”

“And she loves the country,” Trump added. “She’s going to go out of her way a lot, but she does it for the good of the country, not for herself. She’s someone with a lot of confidence. She doesn’t need that.”

Trump’s Fox News town hall came four days before the South Carolina Republican presidential primary, which begins Saturday.

The latest public opinion polls indicate that he maintains a large double-digit lead over former UN ambassador and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, his last major rival for the Republican nomination.
