Aleksei A. Navalny, President Vladimir V. Putin’s most outspoken domestic critic, has died in prison, Russian state media said on Friday.

Navalny’s death was reported by Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service, according to Russian state media. In a statement carried by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, the prison service said Navalny, 47, lost consciousness on Friday while walking through the Arctic prison to which he was transferred late last year.

“The center’s medical staff arrived immediately and an ambulance brigade was called,” the prison service statement said. “All necessary resuscitation measures were taken, which did not give positive results. “The ambulance doctors confirmed the death of the prisoner.”

Putin’s spokesman said Putin had been informed of the death, according to the state Tass news service.
