Russian authorities have returned Alexei Navalny’s body to his mother more than a week after the Russian opposition leader’s death in an Arctic penal colony, according to Navalny’s spokesman.

Spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh wrote on She did not mention whether the family will hold a public funeral.

Navalny’s body was brought to the city of Salekhard, located in the Arctic Circle, after he died in a nearby penal colony on February 16, according to Russian officials. His supporters have accused Russian officials of murdering those who openly criticize President Vladimir Putin.
