A University of Georgia student was found dead “in a wooded area” Thursday after going for a run on the Athens campus, according to university police.

UGA Police received a phone call shortly after noon Thursday “from an individual concerned about the well-being of a friend who had gone out for a run at Intramural Fields earlier in the morning and had not returned as expected,” police said. authorities in a statement.

Lake Herrick is located between several UGA practice fields and Oconee Forest Park. The lake is bordered by a pedestrian path and has a recreational beach. Authorities are asking the public to avoid the area while they investigate.
